Betcha thought I'd forgotten about your trade, huh, *karliashi? *G*

Okay, so the original deal was that I was drawing one character in exchange for your awesome photo manip of Scylla. BUT. Prae seemed awfully lonely up on that hill by himself, and I figured that maybe Van came and kept him company for a while. And the two dudes were just cruisin' and happened across a Longdance, and well. Couldn't help spending a few hours checkin' out the pretty ladies.

If you're not Karlee, go check out her half of the trade! Scylla's on an herbal expedition and found herself some pretty purple flowers.

Sky painted from scratch with a ref pic. The boys were painted reference-free. :D Which might explain poor Prae's stubby legs. I desperately wanted him to have one of those sharply planed, aerodynamic heads like you see on big awesome thoroughbreds sometimes, but for some reason, whenever I draw a horse without a ref they have big foreheads.

This is really stunning. I love the big sky and that big fluffy cloud. The colors really give off that peaceful early morning feel. Seems like a nice quiet moment for these two in the early morning wind. And I love those fly-away manes.

I love seeing the Vale style too. I loved those books when I read them several years ago and used to draw in that style for a while. I especially liked the tufted ears :aww:

Anyway, this is beautiful with fabulous colors and great atmosphere :)

Thank you so much, and I apologize for not replying sooner! You read the Firebringer books? That's awesome! I love running into people who know the series. We used to be spread so thin that it's almost like finding a long-lost cousin. *grin*

Haha, I know what you mean. I really want to go back and reread the books at some point since I read them several years ago, but my list of books to read is so long that I don't know when I'll get the chance :aww:

All I can say is WOW. The sky is so gorgeous and the two characters just POP without taking away from the sky and hill. It all meshes as a pretty picture.

Prae's blankets looks a little wonky. Up where it rides onto his back. Perhaps making it curve a little with the flow of his spine some would make it seem less stiff.

But that's the only thing I can see critique-wise.

Good point re: Prae! I was trying to match Karlee's scalloped edges on Prae's blanket, and I think I got too carried away with making all the wee little random spotties. I'll go back in and see if I can't fix it. Thanks!

I love hazy humid evening pictures and evening clouds, but not sunset pictures, because sunsets make everything in the foreground black. It's hard to google for ref pictures and not get sunsets, because people like sunsets so much. :XD:

I'm glad you commented! I forgot to put in my artist comments last night that I love how lots of artists on my watch list are adding more detailed backgrounds and having such awesome results - particularly you and Feetz, because you're all challenging me to spend more time on mine and learn and get better!

I can imagine that it's difficult to find late evening pics. Especially with people's love for a setting sun XD

And backgrounds \o/ ftw

Holy buttgophers batman, this is omfg. First of all, the composition of this slayed me. So. Fucking. Perfect. I'm really glad you added in Van, the picture wouldn't look the same without him. He really puts a sharp focus on the characters. But oh god, Scylla, those clouds. I've been addicted to trying to draw clouds better, and those clouds are exactly how i want mine too look. They're so pretty, like mountains in the sky.

I'm so enthralled by this I might never stop looking at it. Ever.

You love big thunderhead clouds too? I adore them. And like I was telling Blue, it's really hard to google for clouds with sunset light on them, not backlit by a sunset. I managed to find a few good refs by googling 'evening clouds' and 'evening light.' One of my favorite things to do on clouds is edge them with lighter colors, particularly orange and pink. They just pop, and they always seem to look so awesome no matter what.

If I get time, I'll see if I can toss together a cloud tutorial. I know there's at least a handful of tutorials already out there, but I can at least show you how I paint mine, and maybe that will help?

One other thing: *ANTIFAN-REAL. 4srs. That man can paint skies and interesting light like none other. I don't know if he has any pics with big gigantic clouds in them, but he's awesome at picking out highlights.

Oh, they're to die for. And evening light is honestly my favorite, all those muted, dusky blues, grays, purples, etc. Though I'm not saying I'm not a sucker for a sunset...who isn't.

Lately what I've been doing is just studying the clouds when I'm outside. The dark/light contrasts, how the fluff, how they move, the patterns...and taking a lot of photos. Of course looking at tons and tons of art with gorgeous clouds in them helps too. I totally support the idea of a tutorial, it'd be awesome to see it step by step.

Oh wow, that is some...amazing artwork. All those colors and...jesus. I don't know how people accomplish that kind of stuff, I really don't. Years of practice is one thing, and it'll help, but there is nothing like natural born talent.

Thanks so much for all your help and advice Scylla, you're really too kind.

YAY FRANCE! :glomp: I was pretty happy with how Van turned out (albeit he's supposed to have a frickin' bigger, stronger-looking head than that) and Prae's pose, since I didn't have a ref. I'm just glad he didn't come out all twisted up and weird. :XD:
